Hormone Replacement Therapy: The Choice is Clear
(HRT) Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hormone replacement therapy is a choice you will
have to make. Woman reach menopause naturally around
the age of 50, or as a result of having her ovaries
surgically removed (hysterectomy). As part of the
standard protocol, doctors have routinely prescribed
hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal
symptoms for several decades. These prescription
drugs are comprised of synthetic estrogen or a
synthetic estrogen and synthetic progesterone (aka
progestin) combination. HRT is also used to protect
against the loss of bone after menopause.
HRT Risks Too Great
Anxiety about hormone therapy has existed for
decades. Many women experienced worse symptoms of
menopause or PMS while taking synthetic drug
hormones that they had before trying the treatment.
Doctors turned a cold shoulder to these women and
told them it “wall all in their head”. But then they
and doctors like Dr. John Lee were validated by the
results from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI)
clinical trial, which used HRT to address the most
common causes of death, disability and impaired
quality of life in postmenopausal women.
The hormone replacement therapy (HRT) component of
the WHI trial looked at the long-term use of oral
HRT in older women for the prevention of disease.
But then, the WHI study was stopped in 2002 because
the incidence of invasive breast cancer exceeded the
safety level set by the WHI. For women taking the
combination of estrogen-progestin (Prempro) used in
the study, researchers found an increased risk of:
Heart disease
Breast cancer
Stroke
Blood clots
Dementia
In addition, not only did hormone therapy increase
the women's risk of breast cancer, it also made
tumors more difficult to detect.
Many doctors are no longer prescribing synthetic
HRT. Many doctors, with the help of advertisements
by the large drug companies, began recommending the
same hormones but for a shorter time period.
For women taking estrogen alone (Premarin),
preliminary results showed no increased risk of
breast cancer or heart disease but did find a
slightly increased risk of stroke.
Women with or without their doctors help, are
discovering that conventional HRT does not give them
the overall health and well-being so they are
seeking out healthier alternatives, such as natural
bio-identical hormone replacement, lifestyle
changes, and diet changes. What everyone will
hopefully soon realize is that menopausal and sexual
reproductive problems are actually symptoms of
overall hormonal imbalances. Bring hormones into
balance, counteracting estrogen dominance, is the
key. Natural progesterone cream is usually a major
tool to regaining hormonal balance.
